When I was moving to Plumstead I asked some of my friends. I had the usual it is South East, its terrible, but one friend said - I haven't heard of it but the name sounds nice!

We have just put an offer in on a lovely house in Plumstead mainly because the house prices in other parts of london are so expensive. I have been reading alot of the posts and am pleased to see there are some like minded people living in the area. I am a graduate with fabulous taste and all that and am wondering where there might be a yoga class, or an italian lesson, but the property price outweighs local amenities. Where is the nearest Italian restaurant / deli?? Starbucks? The area seems to have alot of 'potential'. I found the high street and some of the surrounding streets to be scary, but there are lots of green open spaces but are these safe? I will need to walk my dog. I asked people in work about plumstead and they were horrified that we were moving there and called it a sh*t hole. But beggars can't be choosers. Please give me some more info! Well Mr Graduate, you will not be the first to move here, some graduates have been here for years. Italian ( capital I for Italian, seems all that money on your education was wasted) classes can be had at Greenwich Community College, 95 Plumstead Road. www.gcc.ac.uk They also had 21 yoga classes running at various sites around the Borough. I have walked my dogs on the common for the last 3 years, often very late at night, with no problems whatsoever. Crime is very low in Plumstead (place names need capitals as well btw) both by both Greenwich and Inner London standards, check out the figures at www.met.police.uk/

what's with everyone and the use of capitals/punctuation. I cant be bothered when I type away, I spend enough time at work on accuracy and attention to detail. Are you all English teachers?? Plum - yoga classes have a look around Greenwich, just google them. Italian classes - see Sibonetic's posting, I did Spanish in Greenwich a few years ago. Starbucks - Blackheath/Greenwich or Sainsbury's at N Greenwich. Italian restaurant - Eltham and Chislehurst Walking your dog...why not get a Staffie or Rottweiler then it won't matter. Plumstead is pretty safe, I went out and left my back door open the other week something I would never have done in t'other parts of London. Just avoid the High St if you come out of the station and walk up Griffin Road you never need to pass it - I just pretend it doesn't exist.

What's with the High Street bashing?
I agree it's not very pretty, is always awash with discarded kebabs and has some terrible examples of London parking.
But I find it totally safe, and it has some very convenient shops.
I have walked far worse examples of a London high street in much more expensive areas to live.

Well said, you have a much greater range and variety of shops than in lots of other High Streets' at least it's not wall to wall Estate Agents.

Theres some brilliant shops along the high street - especially if you like cooking. If some people who live nearer the common are too scared to come down this way then it really is their loss.

I was delighted to discover this message board via Plumsteadshire but having read this thread I think you are all a bunch of snobs! Co-op become an M&S indeed! I like olives and ciabatta as much as the next man but what a patronising load of sh!te. Why don't you bog off back to Greenwich or Blackheath........oh I forgot, you can't afford it! Well count your blessings then. Hear hear. I have family history in plumstead going back at least 5 generations, at first I thought it ironic when I moved this way but now I kinda see it as my job inform these type of plastic people that their aspirations are ultimately futile. Plumstead has always been a working class area. I'd rather it stayed that way than become a haven for chelsea-tractor driving numpties who think its a substitute for blackheath.

the only "snobby' thing i want to see is some really decent restaurants, an independent classyish italian would be nice, having said that a quick hop on the bus and youre in other areas where there are some and maybe one of those continental cafes so i dont get tempted to get a builders breakfast every morning!
i dont think house prices will ever be that high until decent transport links are implemented

m&s is rubbish. its for people who feel superior when they spend £1.50 on a loaf of bread. the pizzas are pretty good though. basically it used to be better. now they're making alot more profit than they used to as all the budgets have been slashed and the quality, across the board, has fallen. anyway its not like blackheath/greenwich is far away anyhoo, and as for food, well use the internet. order it. then you can split your shop between waitrose, asda, sainsburys, tescos as you prefer. (of course buying locally where possible)

There are a lot of us moving down here, who aren't chelsea tractor driving numpties but wouldn't mind getting a meal out or a takeaway that isn't Chinese, Kebab or curry!

i still believe plumstead has the opportunities to rise out of the depths of depression (ie the high street). It is not about the class system but about an influx of a new generation and tidying up London as a whole whilst providing regeneration and opportunities in previously deprived areas (Plumstead has been very deprived). The DLR, Crossrail and thames crossing will open up new opportunities and provide hopeful regeneration to the area and who in their right mind doesnt want to live somewhere cleaner, brighter and with improved facilities on their doorstep? Why are people so against improvements. Surely neighbours who care about the area and will support local businesses are better than neighbours who dont give a nuts about their houses and the local environment? And yes the people buying houses and doing them up at the moment are making the place look better. I am sure if people could afford to live in Blackheath they would over Plumstead, the point is Plumstead is affordable and it is great it is so cheap, so lets look at welcoming in young professionals, families and potential first time buyers and make Plumstead more well known.

Hurray ! There is now a starbucks in woolwich !! There is going to be a debenhams too. As we all know there is already an M & S food hall and lots of nice little independent cafes too. Look at www.royal-arsenal.com for info re transport links. I am talking crossrail, the DLR, not to mention a new hotel plus Olympic plans for woolwich in 2012. it's all too exciting ;D I saw in last weeks Express that the 3 bedroom townhouses start at £480k !!! One bed flats £250k .........and all this talk will drive the grumpy blogger who doesn't want SE18 to change crazy ;D
