It's not that hard really! If you do that journey regularly, then you will get fed up of sitting in rush hour traffic, whether on bus or in a car, believe me.
I commute to New Cross from PC, and it takes about 50 mins in the car, 1 hour 15 minutes on a bus, and 35 minutes by bicycle.
I hadn't ridden a bike since school days, so when I bought one last year I was dead nervous, but actually you can cover a lot of ground through parks and on cycle routes, and it's surprising how quickly you get fit enough to do it without difficulty.
My bicycle + helmet etc paid for itself in about 9 months, by saving me diesel and bus fares, and I save over half an hour of sitting in traffic a day.
You can get free maps with cycle routes illustrated from TFL on their website.
Evangelical bicycle post over. ;D

Scooter is quicker than bike!!
Otherwise outside of the rush hour probably 177 or 180 from opposite Plumstead Bus Garage.
In rush hour, the train is probably quickest. As Ken has further gridlocked Greenwich with his lunartic changes to the Blackwall Tunnel, and all the Bus Lanes in China won't get you past most of that congestion.
The nicest way this time of year is to get the 53 and walk down through Greenwich Park.
If you go for the bicycle option I can sell you a brand new 21 speed mountain bike for £50!! You will soon get fit practicing on the hills of Plumstead, please see attachment.
Have fun whichever way you go.

What is up with this tidal flow nonsense at the tunnel btw?
The traffic has gone totally loony since this change happened. Luckily I don't face it every day, but if I did, I would be writing a strong letter, not a forum post!

Its amazing that we dont have a decent river service. Plumstead is a stones throw from the Thames as is Thamesmead, Belvedere, Erith etc. We've got a ready made waterway all the way to London and beyond that runs past Charlton, Greenwich and Deptford as well as loads of places on the North.

Seems like a nice way to get to work in the summer though I don't know why they can't run a better service with cheaper tickets. Maybe they have to pay out loads for a river licence or something?

I'd like to see a river service that had regular boats, that you could use a bus pass or oyster card on. The route of the Thames just seems to good to not capitalise on.
I think the main stubling block would be TFL shelling out for a fleet of boats and getting piers/jettys in place. Its not like they cant afford it with money they make from congestion charge.
One glimmer of hope is maybe they'll set something up for the olympics?
