We are in the process of moving from a rented flat in East Dulwich to buying a house at the top end of Riverdale Road near to the Common. The house is great for the price but we are still a little apprehensive about the area (although most people on this site seem to be fairly positive). Does anyone know what Riverdale Road is like and how safe Plumstead is in the evening when coming home late from work etc.

When we first moved to Plumstead I must admit that I was a little apprehensive about walking home from the station at night along the High Street but my boyfriend said I was just me worrying unncecessarily. I hate to admit it but he was right, I soon forgot about my worries. I've been living here about 18 months and I've never ever had a problem and really honestly do not feel unsafe. I live in Tewson Rd which isn't too far from Riverdale. Hope this helps.

Hi Rej
You won't regret it! We've been here for 11 years now and the area is definitely on the up. I know it could do with a few more facilities (decent shops and a few restaurants etc) but it's pretty safe and, on the whole, the people are friendly. Sicne we've been here we've been folowwed by quite a few of our friends as well, none of whome regret moving here.
Hope this helps!

Walking home after work is fine, it is the hill you have to worry about not the people! The High Street is grotty but it is always busy and I think that is a pretty good deterrent. The Common seems to me to feel pretty safe but as with anywhere I would be careful if i was walking home alone late at night. Besides my husband to make me feel safe tells me that no-one will mug you in Plumstead because they wont think you have any cash! Things can happen anywhere in London - look at what happened to Tom ap Ryhs Pryce and John Monckton both lived in nice areas.. We had friends round for dinner on Fri night who live in East Dulwich and they couldn't get over the size of the properties and how quiet the area was up by the Common.

I used to live at the top of Riverdale Road. The hill is a nightmare to walk up if you're pushing a buggy!!!
The area is fine btw - I've never had any problems and I've been living around Plumstead Common for about 4 years now. The only downside for me is transport links.

The area is OK though the high st can be a bit dodgy. Its not so much the crack sleepers by church manorway but the gangs of somalis when they go rampaging.
Its no worse than anywhere else in london.

Having lived in SE18 almost my whole life there have been plenty of times when I’ve been too poor after a late night out that I have had to walk home.
These have always been without incident.

LOL It is probably some kind of filter. I use a football fans board that automatically changes the "c" word to "budgie". PS. Can we have some more smiley options please mod? ROTFLMAO would be good!

Moved here from Brockley six years ago. My friends all said I was mad and that I'd be burgled within months. How wrong they were.
Plumstead Common is infinitely safer than Brockley and my house price has rocketed. From this price point of view, I always knew it would be the smart move. I'm not interested in cafes and restaurants on my doorstep, but am interested in knowing my neighbours and enjoying that community atmosphere. PC is brilliant for that.
